With a background in both art and computer science, I am attracted to activities that blend analytic and aesthetic thought. My computer science thesis work, an analysis of search strategies for large facial image databases, combined my interests in visual imagery (especially faces) and system analysis. An earlier project, the Drawing Evolver, applied an interactive genetic algorithm to the production of line drawings of faces. Recently I have worked on an extended research project with Professor Susan Goldstine on applications of mathematics to bead crochet. Our book on this topic, Crafting Conundrums: Puzzles and Patterns for the Bead Crochet Artist, was published by AK Peters/CRC Press in 2014.
